Screaming Chia
3D printed nylon, dye, beeswax, custom electronics, LED lightbulbs, pigment
2' x 2' x 8'
2025
Screaming Chia muses on plant communication and the impacts of colonization and industrialization on native plants, in this case the California Chia. Chia would have been found growing along the LA River and in the LA River watershed pre-colonization and pre-industrialization as a central plant in the lives of local Chumash and Tongva populations. The piece considers the more-than-humans that have historically inhabited the LA River watershed, the ghosts they have left behind, and the violence at the heart of colonization.
